Things that Are Everywhere In Places I have Lived.

Key West Chickens.

The picture above was taken on the floor of my restaurant Ricky's Blue Heaven, in Key West. In the chairs are customers, dinning on their breakfast. You've got two roosters, one hen, and a little chick to the hen's left on the right of the picture. The photo isn't really accurate, there are a lot more of them, in the restaurant and all over the island. The chick is either, much faster than it's sibling's, or the lone survivor of a much larger group, which might also indicate it's speed.

I have two Phil specific stories of tragic relationships I shared with two chicks. One ending in a sad goodbye, the other in a violent goodbye.

Which would you like to hear?

You're stirring up trouble again, aren't you.

I love violets...I vote for the violet goodbye.

Oh, wait! You said violence. Well, let's go with that then.

Sad, please. And could you put a disclaimer at the top of the violent story so I know to skip it? :-)

i am still trying to deal with the fact that there are live chickens running free in a restaurant.

Chickens are better than the roaches and rats that were in the resturant that I worked at in Key West. I want to hear the violent story.

Do tell..... both stories

Phil said...

Team Brennan - I'll probably tell both.

Flan - I don't want you hating on my like Mel when I do. That would make me sad.

Dirty - I like stories too.

Megan - You got it.

Natalie - Welcome! Thanks for reading and commenting. The floor of the resturant was outside, in a fenced in yard. There were also many a cat hanging out. Six-toed cats...

Dave (and Team Brennan) - You both know these stories.

Johnny - Coming up.

This isn't about chickens watching too much tv is it?

Dale - Great idea.

You know, it's a myth that roosters crow in the morning. The truth is that they crow ALL NIGHT LONG.

Ooh, Dave, I hate that song!

Phil, I could never hate you.

there was a rooster living in the apartment next door to our old place in nyc. not the sound we expected to wake up to our first night in the Big City.

Are you still having trouble deciding, Phil? Why not flip a coin?

Phil said...

No, I'm gonna do both. I'm just a painfully slow writer.

Was this restaurant along the same lines as a 'pick your own lobster out of the tank' place?

Chaylene - Thanks for visiting and commenting. No, not quite. Though I often got that question, "Do you use these chickens to cook with?" No we didn't. The chicken's were protected by law. For health reasons, to prevent cock fights, and there was alittle voodoo on the island. Tourist tend not to like the blood sacrifices.

To my disgust, diners at the resturant had no problem feeding the chickens scrambled eggs. resturant
