Out with the Nu...

If you grew up in Elmhurst, in the eighties, you rented your videos from one place.

Nu Time Video.

This was the place that rented us Evil Dead 2 for the first time. Let me walk out with a copy of Faces Of Death. Turned me on to the great history of professional wrestling with the horrifyingly violent video, I Like To Hurt People.

All you needed was a phone number. Tell them and get the movie.

When The Wife and I moved back here I was happy and surprised it was still here. I checked it out. Good selection. Mainstream titles plus a lot of stuff you wouldn't see at Blockbuster. The only real difference was they had gone to DVD.

I remember when they rented Beta tapes.

When a buddy from L.A.'s independent movie, Kwik Stop, came out on DVD, to a limited release of course, it was right there on the shelf.

Good bye Nu Time.

At least Gem Comics is still around.

Why must all the great places close? We still have our "phone number renatal place" and they still have $1.00 rental and the "back room" for the 18 and older perverted crowd...where will you go for your "back room" rentals now?

I read a story in the WSJ a few years ago about independent video stores. According the article, the only reason those places stuck around as long as they did was because of porno. But now with OnDemand, Amazon and whatever you fucking want online - independent video stores appear doomed. So does Blockbuster for that matter, but that is another story.

I'm not a netflix guy. Do they offer porn?

If they do I'm totally signing up.

If they are having their "everything must go sale" you might as well buy that old copy of Faces of Death VII, that seminal classic that turns a boy... into the same boy with an interest in snuff films.
I think thats the one where the natives beat that monkeys head with a hammer and then eat the brains.

That monkey just wouldn't shut up.

I grew up there. Didn't make it to Nutime much. It was actually a little after my time. Was back in Elmhurst a while ago, it seems to have changed alot - reminds me of Lincoln Park.

Yes. Elmhurst has grown and changed alot. Since I left and came back there is a larger college population, more condos, etc. I gotta give it credit though. I think it has improved alot to, plus we still have Gem Comics, Chocolate Moon, York Theatre, etc.

Thanks for reading.
