Warning!! The following post contains pictures of cicadas.
With all the goings on around here, I haven't even mentioned the cicadas. There are alot of them. Not as many as I remember in '90, but still quite a few.
I was initially disappointed in them. Just another memory from childhood proven false, or at least diminished, I thought. Perhaps it was exaggerated in my mind, the cicadas of 1990. Or, maybe there were more 17 years ago. I didn't know, there just seemed to be less of them this time.
Those assumptions were proved an overreaction. There are plenty of cicadas here in 2007.

Your boys are adorable.
Oh my god! I am so glad I live in the city. Those photos are disgusting.
Dirty - Thanks, but my headache says, "not always."
Natalie - Just take the westbound train to Elmhurst if you want a closer look.
Are your kids trying to kill you too?
Ha! Patrick looks like he's daring Philip to eat that cicada.
"Come on... eat it..."
You ought to see the Cottage Hill area. I was out this morning & was practically deafened. One landed in my hair, so I have declared an all out war.

Bioth - Who is Bioth?
Your boys are cuties. The bugs? Not so much.
I've yet to see one in St. Charles. I pray they stay in Elmhurst.
Thanks for the pictures. I'm nearly fifty and my movements around the country have kept me from ever witnessing a periodic brood. I live far up the North Shore and have so far only seen them in Lake Forest, but there they are quite multitudinous. Cheerful creatures, though it seems that most don't live long. Can't understand how some people can find them unpleasant.
I too, remember the massive onslaught back 17 years ago & I thought the same thing - that there didn't seem to be as many as the last time - don't get me wrong - THERE'S PLENTY!!!! It just seemed like they were EVERYWHERE you stepped, and you had to wave your hands around like a raving lunatic just so you wouldn't get covered in them!! What I forgot (possibly on purpose?!?!) was the high pitch, constant, LOUD buzzing they made!!!!! My boys are in BUG HEAVEN right now - THEY LOVE'EM!!!! It's a very exciting thing for them!! (Andrew's on a quest to find a blue-eyed one!!!) :D
